Navarra launches Spain’s first deposit-return scheme for drink containers this summer

30 de July de 2025

From
June to August 2025, Sangüesa pilots a groundbreaking Deposit-Return System
(SDDR) for plastic bottles and cans—Navarra’s first and Spain’s most innovative
trial.

Between June 1 and August 31, 2025,
Sangüesa is testing a pioneering Deposit-Return Scheme (SDDR)—the first
of its kind in Navarra and a national pilot. Spearheaded by the Government of
Navarra’s OPREC and the Sangüesa Mancomunidad, the initiative gives consumers a
€0.10 refund per returned bottle or can (up to 3 liters).

In the first six weeks, the scheme
collected 80,000 containers, with 75?% returned via two reverse-vending
machines located at Calle Mayor 23 and the BM supermarket. Additionally, 10
local stores accept manual returns.

Officials have praised the “exemplary
behavior” of residents, noting a significant drop in single-use waste heading
to landfills. The initiative aims to promote a circular economy, reduce
litter, and enhance sustainable practices in Navarra.

This pilot will serve as a national model
ahead of a wider rollout of the SDDR across Spain by November 2026, positioning
Navarra as a leader in environmental innovation.
