Navarra connects first biomethane plant to gas grid—a green energy milestone

17 de September de 2025

Navarra
achieves a sustainable breakthrough: its first biomethane plant connected to
the gas network
, led by Naturgy and Nedgia, further advancing the region’s
energy transition and circular economy credentials.

Nedgia, Naturgy’s gas distribution
subsidiary, has successfully integrated Navarra’s first biomethane plant,
located in Cabanillas and developed by E?Cogeneración Cabanillas,
into the gas grid. This facility will inject up to 22 GWh of renewable gas
per year
, enough to power 4,000 households.

The plant upgrade enables a flow of 320
Nm³/h
of biomethane, derived from agro-industrial and livestock residues,
and includes valorization of digestate for use as a bio-fertilizer. This
project received co-financing from the IDAE energy agency.

Nedgia Navarra carried out the 25-meter
technical connection—described by CEO Raúl Suárez as a strategic step
towards a competitive, sustainable decarbonization pathway.

Nationally, Nedgia operates twelve
biometane plants with a combined capacity of 328 GWh/year, and has 74
additional projects underway
, aiming for a total capacity of 4,200
GWh/year
. In Navarra alone, seven more projects in development could
contribute up to 400 GWh/year.

This development reinforces Navarra’s
positioning as a leader in renewable energy, making the region a top
destination for international professionals in sustainability and clean
technology.
