launched a new experimental winegrowing trial designed to anticipate the
effects of climate change and help vineyards adapt to increasingly challenging
temperatures and water availability.

The
research is taking place on a 1.4-hectare experimental plot in Olite /
Erriberri, where more than 3,600 vines representing 21 different grape
varieties have been planted. Researchers will monitor their agronomic and
winemaking performance under changing climate conditions over the coming years.

The
selection combines grape varieties traditionally grown in Navarra with other
Spanish and European varieties. Researchers will analyse factors such as
resistance to higher temperatures and drought, ripening cycles, productivity
and the final quality of both grapes and wine.

The
initiative is being developed by EVENA (Navarra’s Viticulture and Oenology
Station), part of INTIA, with the aim of generating scientific knowledge
that can eventually be transferred directly to winegrowers and wineries.

takes a long-term approach. By observing how different grape varieties evolve
over several years, researchers hope to identify those with the greatest
potential to adapt to the environmental conditions that could define the future
of Navarra’s wine industry.
