15 de October de 2025

Navarra’s medical excellence celebrates two
new achievements: the Transplant Coordination Unit receives the gold medal from
transplant athlete Iosu Martín, and Dr. Rafael Sádaba, from Navarra University
Hospital, is appointed president of the European Association for
Cardio-Thoracic Surgery.

Navarra’s healthcare system continues to
earn recognition, strengthening its national and international reputation. Two
recent milestones highlight the commitment, innovation, and human quality of
healthcare professionals in the region.

The Transplant Coordination Unit recognized for its solidarity work

On the occasion of World Organ Donation and
Transplantation Day
, Navarra’s Regional Transplant Coordination Unit
received the gold medal won by kidney transplant athlete Iosu Martín
at the 11th National Transplant Games, held in Lorca (Murcia).

The gesture of presenting the medal to the
medical team symbolizes gratitude and hope, recognizing the work of those who
promote and coordinate organ donation processes in Navarra.

Dr. José Roldán Ramírez, regional coordinator, stated: “Sport and donation share values
such as effort, generosity, and hope. Each transplant is a story of life that
continues.”

For his part, Iosu Martín emphasized that
the medal “represents the life that was given back to me thanks to the
generosity of a donor and the work of a great medical team.”

The ceremony also paid tribute to donors
and their families, reaffirming Navarra’s commitment to solidarity and
donation as a life-saving act
.

Rafael Sádaba, new European president in cardiothoracic surgery

Dr. Rafael Sádaba, Head of the Cardiac Surgery Department at Navarra University
Hospital (HUN)
, has been appointed President of the European Association
for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS)
, one of the leading international
medical societies in his specialty.
Previously Vice President of the
association, Dr. Sádaba has held numerous scientific and educational positions
within EACTS, while also conducting research at Navarrabiomed and
teaching as an Associate Professor at the Public University of Navarra
(UPNA)
.

With training in the United Kingdom and
Australia, and a PhD from UPNA on degenerative aortic valve disease, his
leadership strengthens Navarra’s international presence in advanced medical
research and practice.
This appointment positions the region as a European
benchmark in cardiac surgery
, showcasing Navarra’s ability to project
medical talent at the highest level.

Two achievements, one message: good medicine lives in Navarra

Both milestones reflect the same truth: a
community that combines technical excellence, humanity, and a spirit of
service.

These recognitions:
  • Strengthen Navarra’s image as a region with advanced, committed
    healthcare.
  • Boost the attraction of national and international medical and
    scientific talent.
  • Position Navarra’s health system as a model of innovation and
    empathy.
Good medicine —the kind that heals, cares,
and inspires— is practiced and led from Navarra.
