Navarra strengthens an R&D&I ecosystem transforming the future of healthcare

6 de October de 2026

Navarra
continues to strengthen its position as a hub for health research and
innovation
. The Faculty of Health Sciences at the Public University of
Navarra (UPNA) recently hosted a strategic event focused on GEMA and SIBERIA,
two initiatives designed to promote personalised medicine, advanced therapies
and innovative biotechnology solutions.

Nearly one
hundred professionals from companies, universities, technology centres,
institutions and healthcare organisations
took part in the event,
showcasing some of the technologies already being developed within Navarra’s
innovation ecosystem.

One of the
key areas explored was the use of artificial intelligence in cancer research.
Marcos Díaz-Gay, Head of the Digital Genomics Group at Spain’s National Cancer
Research Centre (CNIO), presented his team’s work using AI and machine learning
to identify mutation patterns in tumours. These technologies could contribute
to more accurate diagnoses, better predictions of disease progression and
improved understanding of how patients may respond to treatments.

The event
also showcased projects developed in Navarra, including INNOLFACT 2.0,
combining artificial intelligence and drug repurposing to advance precision
medicine for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s; VYSIUM
HEALTH
, developing a multisensory medical device for stroke patients; and SENSORFIT-4HEART,
exploring personalised, remotely monitored physical exercise as a treatment for
certain heart failure patients.

One of
Navarra’s greatest strengths, however, lies in its ability to move innovation from
research to the market
. Universities, research centres, companies, startups
and innovation organisations work together to transform scientific knowledge
into new technologies, products and healthcare solutions.

This
ecosystem will also benefit from the new Biofoundry at the IRIS Innovation
Hub
, an advanced infrastructure focused on synthetic biology and
biotechnology that will be available to Navarra’s innovation community and
represents a €2.5 million investment.

The figures
illustrate the scale of this commitment. Since 2019, the strategic GEMA and
SIBERIA programmes have supported 40 R&D&I projects with more than €55
million in funding
— 27 projects through GEMA and 13 through SIBERIA.

For
international professionals, behind these projects lies another story: one of talent
and career opportunities
. Biotechnology, bioinformatics, medicine,
biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, data science, clinical
research and medical-device development are just some of the fields
contributing to this growing ecosystem.

Navarra is
showing that healthcare innovation is not only about having advanced
infrastructure. It also requires professionals capable of connecting science,
technology and business to turn ideas into real-world solutions.

And that
is exactly the kind of environment where talent can turn research into impact.
