Navarra invests €2.5 million to become a European hub for synthetic biology and biotechnology

23 de September de 2026

Navarra
aims to become a European reference point for synthetic biology and advanced
biotechnology
. To move towards this goal, the Government of Navarra has
approved a €2.5 million investment for 2027 to strengthen the scientific
and technological capabilities of the IRIS Innovation Hub.

At the
heart of this strategy is the development of a new-generation biofoundry:
an automated bioproduction facility that combines robotics, artificial
intelligence and synthetic biology to design, build and test biological systems
at high speed.
Its
potential extends across several sectors that are strategically important to
Navarra, including healthcare, biotechnology and agri-food, helping
transform scientific research into real industrial applications.

New
technology will be installed at both the IRIS Hub facilities in Sario and
Navarrabiomed. The investment will strengthen automation, advanced computing
and robotics capabilities, while Navarrabiomed will receive an advanced
proteomics platform offering analytical possibilities that are not currently
available with its existing technology.

The
ambition goes even further: Navarra aims to become home to Spain’s first
nationally recognised biofoundry
, positioning the region at the forefront
of advanced biotechnology and synthetic biology in Europe.

For
international talent, this investment represents much more than new
infrastructure. Developing an ecosystem of this scale requires highly
specialised professionals in biotechnology, biology, bioinformatics, artificial
intelligence, engineering, robotics, data science and biomedical research.

Navarra is
investing today in technologies that could transform tomorrow’s healthcare,
food and industry. In doing so, it is creating an increasingly attractive
environment for scientific and technological talent looking to research,
innovate and build a career with global impact.
