The Faculty of Health Sciences at the Public University of<br \/>\nNavarra (UPNA) recently hosted a strategic event focused on GEMA and SIBERIA,<br \/>\ntwo initiatives designed to promote personalised medicine, advanced therapies<br \/>\nand innovative biotechnology solutions.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">Nearly one<br \/>\nhundred professionals from <b>companies, universities, technology centres,<br \/>\ninstitutions and healthcare organisations<\/b> took part in the event,<br \/>\nshowcasing some of the technologies already being developed within Navarra&#8217;s<br \/>\ninnovation ecosystem. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">One of the<br \/>\nkey areas explored was the use of <b>artificial intelligence in cancer research<\/b>.<br \/>\nMarcos D\u00edaz-Gay, Head of the Digital Genomics Group at Spain&#8217;s National Cancer<br \/>\nResearch Centre (CNIO), presented his team&#8217;s work using AI and machine learning<br \/>\nto identify mutation patterns in tumours. These technologies could contribute<br \/>\nto more accurate diagnoses, better predictions of disease progression and<br \/>\nimproved understanding of how patients may respond to treatments.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">The event<br \/>\nalso showcased projects developed in Navarra, including <b>INNOLFACT 2.0<\/b>,<br \/>\ncombining artificial intelligence and drug repurposing to advance precision<br \/>\nmedicine for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer&#8217;s and Parkinson&#8217;s; <b>VYSIUM<br \/>\nHEALTH<\/b>, developing a multisensory medical device for stroke patients; and <b>SENSORFIT-4HEART<\/b>,<br \/>\nexploring personalised, remotely monitored physical exercise as a treatment for<br \/>\ncertain heart failure patients. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">One of<br \/>\nNavarra&#8217;s greatest strengths, however, lies in its ability to move innovation <b>from<br \/>\nresearch to the market<\/b>. Universities, research centres, companies, startups<br \/>\nand innovation organisations work together to transform scientific knowledge<br \/>\ninto new technologies, products and healthcare solutions.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">This<br \/>\necosystem will also benefit from the new <b>Biofoundry at the IRIS Innovation<br \/>\nHub<\/b>, an advanced infrastructure focused on synthetic biology and<br \/>\nbiotechnology that will be available to Navarra&#8217;s innovation community and<br \/>\nrepresents a \u20ac2.5 million investment. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">The figures<br \/>\nillustrate the scale of this commitment. Since 2019, the strategic <b>GEMA and<br \/>\nSIBERIA programmes have supported 40 R&amp;D&amp;I projects with more than \u20ac55<br \/>\nmillion in funding<\/b> \u2014 27 projects through GEMA and 13 through SIBERIA. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">For<br \/>\ninternational professionals, behind these projects lies another story: one of <b>talent<br \/>\nand career opportunities<\/b>. Biotechnology, bioinformatics, medicine,<br \/>\nbiomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, data science, clinical<br \/>\nresearch and medical-device development are just some of the fields<br \/>\ncontributing to this growing ecosystem.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">Navarra is<br \/>\nshowing that healthcare innovation is not only about having advanced<br \/>\ninfrastructure.
